President Obama Announces New Steps to Fix Our Broken Immigration System

a) What is he going to do?
First, he is going to build on their progress at the border with additional resources for their law enforcement personnel. So that they can stem the flow of illegal crossings, and speed the return of those who do cross over. Second, he will make it easier and faster for high-skilled immigrants, graduates and entrepreneurs to stay and contribute to their economy, as so many business leaders have proposed. Third, they will take steps to deal responsibly with the millions of undocumented immigrants who already live in their country.

b) How can he do this without Congress's blessing?
He can do this because in some cases the president can do things without the Congress’s blessing.

 c) What is an American according to Obama?
What makes you an American is the shared commitment to an ideal. That all of them is created equal, and all of them have the chance to make of their lives how they want to. Being an American is about more than what you look like, what you last names are, or what you worship.

d) What does Obama urge the House of Representatives to do?
He wants them to pass a bill. He wants to work with both parties to pass a more permanent legislative solution. And the day he sign that bill into law, the actions he takes will no longer be necessary.

 e) What is your stand to the issue; do you think Congress will pass the bill soon? Give reasons for your opinion.
I am not sure if the Congress will pass the bill, but I hope so. Because I support what Obama said and I think it will work out fine, even though it will be expensive. It sounds like a good system, that will help America.

Can terrorism ever be justified?
Before I start to discuss terrorism, I should define it: terrorism is the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.
Some people would say that as long as you are doing it for a good cause it does not matter what you do. I disagree. For example, if I would want something, and you were in my way, is it fair that I terrorise you? You, an innocent person, who lives a very different life, who might have a family, should die so I get what I want. That is not fair.
How can you justify terrorism? How can you say that it is okay to murder people because you want to send a message? Some organizations bomb places or murder innocent people because the country they live in is in turmoil and they blame others, like USA. USA have been involved in many wars on foreign soil, and the terrorist thinks that it is fair to murder civilian because of American involvement. The call it holy war, Jihad, and justify terror by saying it is the will of god. I strongly disagree.
The organization called IS, they are beheading good people who try to help the poor and innocent people in Syria. Last month the IS beheaded a journalist named James Foley. The only reason they murdered him was that he was American and they wanted to send a message to USA, so they would stop fighting against them.
I feel so sorry for the people who feel like they have to murder people to get what they want. I cannot possible imagine what went wrong when those human beings grew up. How can a man take someone else life and when did he decide to play god whit others life? Every man and woman on this earth should be allowed to live a full life, and some terrorist should not take that away from him or her.

My question to you is; how can you achieve peace when you terrorise and murder innocent people? Is it not much better to communicate with each other?

What we did on Monday the 27th of Ocotber:

We started the lesson with reading a poem called "Global Village" by a Nigerian author called Yusufu M. Adamu. Then we discussed what the meaning of the poem was. In my opinion, the message in the poem is that we are all the same, even though we look different on the outside and live in different countries. Every person should have the right to be respected.
We walked around in the classroom and read the poem aloud, it was actually fun.
Then there was a poem called "The Right Word" by Pakistan/British writer named Imtiaz Dharker. We read it to ourselves and then we discussed it a bit. The poem was about terrorism, and asking who the terrorists are. That turns out to be a difficult question, because it can be anyone and not just the person who has the “scary looks”. Everyone in the class got one stanza each, except the readers, and made a little play.

At the end of the class, we discussed terrorism.

When we talked about the poems we analysed them and used questions from Gro's blog.

Look back on the list on page 175 ("Seven ways to be heard"). Which of these methods does Malin use in her role as Amnesty activist?

Malin used method 7: Influence the authorities.
She was one of many Amnesty activist who sendt letters to Ethiopian authorities, because they wanted to release an Ethopian woman. She was a judge, who became unpopular with the government. She was thrown into prison for expressing her opinion.

Amnesty International uses method 2: Use social media.

Obama authorizes air surveillance of IS in Syria

I have been focusing on Obama and the situation in Syria. I read three articles about this and have been looking into what they think about Obama authorizing air surveillance of IS in Syria.

The daily mail (UK)They refers to IS as "barbaric terrorists". Suddenly they are questioning Obama and his plan to stop IS. It seems like they do not believe that the US are doing everything in their power. They mention that the times named seven countries “likely enlisted”. Daily mail says that a trustful source from the State Department would not confirm that any country have been asked to provide help. In the article they wrote; Obama also branded IS “a cancer”, bragging that “tyrants and murderers before them should recognize that kind of hateful vision ultimately is no match for the strength and hopes of people who stand together for the security and dignity and freedom that is the birth right of every human being.” Daily mails comment on that was that “it was laid-on-thick rhetoric suggests either a confidence that a coalition will materialize, or a brazen acknowledgment that America will be left to bomb IS on its own in Syria.”

The New York Times (USA)They focused a lot on America and the wellbeing of American citizen. They mention a lot what the people from the Withe House says. They are also focusing on how the attacks are happening, and what kind on weapons and plane they are using to bomb IS. The New York Times repeatedly writes that Obama does not want to help Syria’s strong-arm dictator Mr. Assad. The thing is that USA are very good at something called “cloak and dagger”. That is kind of like political nonsense, they say a lot and uses many words, but it really does not matter.

Aljazeera (Egypt)They had a very short article, while the others were long. Aljazeera is very straightforward and gives us the information we need. They do not quote anybody or say their opinion, they do not pick sides. So this article is just like the others, minus the “picking sides”-part.

If you are wondering who the IS are, follow this link and read a bit more--->  http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-29052144

Summary from the text Intoduction: Media in Motion.

The text is about media in general. It says that the Internet is the most important media development of the last decades. However, somethings never change. Like the dominance of English, it is a language that 56.7% of the world popultation speak. Although, the continent that uses the internet the most, is Asia (44.0%), and they do not have English as their main language.
However, in the nowdays, there are almost as many people who speak Chinese as people who speak English.
Time will show what language will dominate the Internet.

Summary from Friday 05 September.

We started the day with doing tasks and talking about the media evolution. Then we made a really fun Kahoot about media. We used the information we found on the Internet about different events over the years.
Then we wrote down questions, and asked Gro Skeie (teacher,40years), the bookstore-lady (60 years) and a girl at Coop (19 years).
If i am going to sum up what they said, i would have to say that they all used social media in one way or another.

The questions:

  • How often do you use Facebook?
  • Do you have Snapchat and/or Instagram?
  • Do you think teenagers uses the Internet too much?
  • Do you know what an app is?
  • What kind off apps do you know?
  • How do you think the social media will be in 10 years?
  • How much time do you use on the Internet?
  • Do you have your phone with you all the time?

The bookstore-lady did not have Facebook, but she had a
smartphone that she used to call friends and look at VG.
Gro also used her phone to read the news, but she also had
Facebook that she used 3-4 times a week. The girl at Coop
only used Facebook if she was bored.

When we were done interviewing people, we went to the
video-room and watched "Social Network". The movie is based
on the true story on how Facebook was made.

Task 1. Discussion

a) How much of this did you know from before? Did anything in the timeline come as a surprise to you?

I don't know much about the internet evolution. I was surprised that the internet was called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency). I also did not know that Pizza Hut started to taking orders online in 1994.

b) Are there any other events, inventions, people, etc. that you think should be included in the timeline?

I would probably include social medias like Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat.
